On the Journey: A Study in Sumi-e, Haiku & Haiga — Thursday, November 6–Tuesday, January 6. This exhibit explores a style of brush painting that originated in 13th-century Japan. Closely associated with Zen Buddhism and similar in concept to Japanese calligraphy, Sumi-e (black-ink pictures) and Haiga rely on simplicity of thought, action, and form to create works of understated beauty. Painter and poet Lidia Rozmus (lidiarozmus.com) traveled to Japan to learn about its culture and arts. These experiences enriched her understanding of the spirit that lives in these ancient Japanese techniques—where the essence of form is expressed with a single brush stroke. You are also invited to attend a special Haiku Workshop on Sunday, November 9, 2 PM to learn more about the evocative partnership between Japanese painting and poetry. Register here.
