Welcome to Events by Email, a monthly publication by the Glenview Public Library. This electronic newsletter provides you with a list of upcoming programs and services available at the Library. Use the links provided to access the online events calendar and program registration.

Library Closing — The Library will close on Wednesday, November 23 at 5 PM for the Thanksgiving Holiday and reopen at 9 AM on Friday, November 25. No materials are due on dates when the Library is closed. Battle of the Books (grades 4 & 5) — Registration: Through November 10. Orientation: Wednesday, November 16 OR Thursday, November 17, 7-8 PM. This Youth Services tradition is now in its 35th year, but the game remains the same. Establish a team of four members, read the books, and test your knowledge with other teams at the Library. Open to students from participating schools. Please register here. NOW OPEN! Drop-In Homework Help Center (grades 1-8) — Tuesdays through December 13, 6-7:30 PM, Youth Program Room. High School volunteers to the (homework) rescue. Thirty-minute sessions for homework, reading, and math skills practice provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Children may be grouped by subject and grade level. No sessions November 8 & 22.

You can search the catalog and access your Library account, download ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, music and movies...or learn a new language, read a newspaper, and more. Join us for a Friday Night “Appy Hour” where Staff will be on hand to demonstrate the many Library apps and services that are available for FREE on your mobile device. Tech Beginnings: How to Introduce Coding & Robotics to Young Children — Wednesday, November 9, 7-8:30 PM, Community Room. Relevant to many types of learning, coding teaches powerful ideas, including logic, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Author and educator Ann Gadzikowski will discuss concepts of computer programming appropriate and meaningful to young children in early childhood and primary classrooms. Gadzikowski will also demonstrate some of the best apps and games for teaching coding, as well as “tangible tech” tools like Bee-Bot robots. CPDUs (ISBE) and DCFS credits available. Rex! — Monday, November 14, 7 PM, Community Room. This event is brought to you FREE of charge by proceeds from Used Book Store sales. Seating is limited to 180 guests. Everyone must be registered in advance. Children in middle school and high school are encouraged to attend to learn more about this scientific field. Dr. Paul Sereno of the University of Chicago is the most well-known paleontologist of our time. Dr. Sereno is a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. He will talk about the biggest predators on Earth, including his own dinosaur discoveries. Following this fascinating presentation, Dr. Sereno will answer questions. Sculpture at Any Age — Through November 15. Multiple Artists: North Shore Senior Center. The community art theme continues with a display by sculptors from ages 60 to 90, proving that creativity flourishes at any age. Working in a studio environment full of camaraderie and friendship, we invite you to enjoy the lively quality of their art. Nature in Glenview: The Beauty Around Us — Through Wednesday, November 16. Multiple Artists: Co-sponsored by the Glenview Art League and Natural Resources Commission of Glenview. Glenview has a variety of natural resources to discover. We are fortunate to have rivers, woods, wetlands, and prairies to explore. Nature is as close as your own back door. Experience our hometown beauty through the eyes of talented local artists.

Don Quichotte by Jules Massenet. Tales of intrigue, love, and death from the 2016/17 Lyric Opera of Chicago season. Moderated by former Lyric Opera docents. Register here. Heroes on Deck — Tuesday, November 15, 7-8:30 PM, Community Room. Commemorate Veteran’s Day with a film (narrated by Bill Kurtis) that tells the little-known local story about an innovative response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Pilots were trained in the safety of Lake Michigan, and thus the intriguing story unfolds. Executive Producer Harvey Moshman will introduce the film and lead a Q&A. Register here. Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren), a military officer in command of an operation to capture terrorists in Kenya, sees her mission escalate when a girl enters the kill zone. An international dispute is triggered over the moral implications of modern warfare.

GLENergy presents Hidden Memory: An American Story — Friday, November 4, 1-2 PM, Community Room. World War II was a different experience for Japanese Americans. Join storyteller Anne Shimojima as she shares the story of her family’s journey from Japan and through the difficult war years. This story was inspired by an interview Anne did with her 91-year-old aunt, who experienced the Portland, Oregon assembly center and a California incarceration camp. Location: Hackney’s on Lake, 1514 E. Lake Avenue, Glenview. Someone by Alice McDermott. We first glimpse Marie Commeford as a child: a girl in thick glasses observing her pre-Depression world from a Brooklyn stoop through her first heartbreak and eventual marriage, and then follow Marie through the changing world of the twentieth century and her Irish-American enclave. Nonfiction Book Group — Wednesday, November 16, 7 PM, Multipurpose Room. Little Demon in the City of Light: A True Story of Murder and Mesmerism in Belle Epoque Paris by Steven Levingston. Adult Literacy Classes: Fall Session — Tuesdays & Thursdays, Through December 8, 9:15 AM-12:15 PM (no class November 24). A unique opportunity for native and non-native English speakers to improve their reading and writing skills. A small, friendly group led by a teacher and volunteer tutors meets twice weekly.
