StoryWalk®: Flying Lessons by Gilbert Ford — Through Sunday, September 28. Welcome back to the Storybook Trail in Little Bear Garden at Gallery Park, 2001 Patriot Blvd. Walk, skip, jog, or better yet, bike along the path to read a silly, but ultimately heartwarming story about a big and noisy steel “bird” with twin engines who has trouble fitting in with a flock of doves. This book was specially selected to honor the Glenview Park District’s Flight Fest. Also, in celebration of Flight Fest, scan the QR code at the end of the storybook to be entered into a special drawing. Presented by the Glenview Park District, Bike Glenview Initiative, and the Glenview Public Library. TheStoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and was developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.Property Tax Appeals Seminar — Wednesday, August 27, 7 PM, Community Room East. Home! Designing with Heart, Humor & Inspiration — Through September 9. Summertime is a time for dreaming. Do you often dream about how to add new life to your home décor? National Interior Photographer Jennifer Jordan and Field Editor/Photo Stylist Hilary Rose share their passion for design with a dozen creative ideas from their new book, Been There Shot That. The recipe for success by these two design veterans is simple−they cover a range of styles with a mix of good advice, inspiration, humor, and heart. From showcasing a personal collection to using architectural salvage, their ideas will empower you to hone your own decorating style without breaking the bank. Imagine yourself on a sunny summer porch with this delightful display, just a sampling of the detailed work by the talented group of artisans of the North Shore Miniature Society. Chef Michael Maddox returns to the Library, bringing a touch of Italian warmth and sunshine to your own summertime table with simple recipes and a “how to” cooking demo. Tasting included. The Hills Are Alive… With the Sound of Julie — Tuesday, August 12, 7 PM, Community Room. Cabaret artist Laura Freedman chronicles the life of Julie Andrews, from her beginnings in Vaudeville to her vocal struggles of today. Her autobiography Home, as well as a fan’s biography, were used to create wonderful stories about her life and career. Hits included are “The Sound of Music,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “Le Jazz Hot,” and “A Spoonful of Sugar.” Guaranteed to make you smile and tap your feet. Register here. Pair this performance with the movie Saving Mr. Banks, Friday, August 15, 2 & 6:30 PM. Amelia Earhart: A Life in Flight — Tuesday, August 19, 7 PM, Community Room. Earhart’s courageous exploits and spirited personality made her an enduring international celebrity. The first woman to cross the Atlantic by airplane (1928) and to fly solo across the Atlantic (1932), Earhart and her navigator mysteriously disappeared over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937 during their attempted round-the-world flight. This first-person dramatic narrative by a favorite Library presenter, Leslie Goddard, recounts Earhart’s life, her unconventional views on marriage, and her tireless work to promote aviation and opportunities for women. Inspired by her books 20 Hrs., 40 Min. (1928), The Fun of It (1932) and Last Flight (1937, posthumous). Register here.

Saving Mr. Banks (125min/PG-13) — Friday, August 15, 2 & 6:30 PM, Community Room. The curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer, P.L. Travers (brilliantly played by Emma Thompson) reflects on her childhood after reluctantly meeting with Walt Disney (Tom Hanks), who seeks to adapt her Mary Poppins books for the big screen. After many struggles, together they succeed in making one of the most endearing films in cinematic history. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby. One-On-One CJE Senior Life Counseling — Tuesday, August 26, 9:30 AM-Noon, Second Floor Study Room. 30-minute appointments. Resource Specialists from CJE SeniorLife will provide individual counseling to adults ages 60 and over, their families, and caregivers. Topics include the selection of appropriate retirement benefits, picking the right health insurance and Medicare programs, determining housing needs, and identifying supportive resources. Free Adult Literacy Classes: Summer Session — Tuesdays & Thursdays, July 1–August 21, 9:15 AM-12:15 PM. A unique opportunity for native and non-native English speakers to improve their reading and writing skills. A small, friendly group led by a teacher and volunteer tutors meets twice weekly.
