Library Closing — The Library will be closed Sunday, September 4 and Monday, September 5 for the Labor Day Holiday. No materials are due on dates when the Library is closed Banned Books Week — September 25–October 1. Banned Books Week is an annual event that celebrates the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment—highlighting the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the potential harm of censorship. Visit the special display featuring challenged books. Sponsored by the American Library Association. National Library Card Sign-Up Month: The Smartest Card in Your Wallet —There is no better time of year than September to sign up for a library card. Libraries around the nation celebrate the value of a library card throughout the month. A library card is your ticket to joining 30,000 Glenview residents who already turn to the Glenview Public Library as their source for books, movies, music, digital media, programming, outreach, job counseling, technology classes, and so much more. A library card is essential for students, providing access to school books, online homework help, and online research tools for help in their studies. You can even check out a Museum Adventure Pass with your library card! Celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month with a trip to the Library to explore the many resources available, and receive a Welcome packet when you register for your card at the Circulation Desk.

GLENergy Senior Housing Fair — Wednesday, September 14, 3:30-6:30 PM, Community Room. This open house will provide an opportunity for older adults and their families to explore the various types of senior residences in the Glenview area. Representatives will display materials and be available to talk about their facilities with Fair attendees. Just drop in. Friends of the Glenview Library Breakfast Program: Barbara Rinella Book Review — Thursday, September 15, 9:15 AM. Location: Sunset Ridge Country Club. Enjoy a delicious breakfast before our talented, ever-popular reviewer will perform as several of America's First Ladies in this elegant setting. As politics heat up this fall, learn more about our country's recent leading ladies and their daily lives. $40/person includes breakfast. Call 847-998-1514 for program details. Orphan Train: A Heartland Story — Sunday, September 18, 2-3 PM, Community Room. From 1854–1929, 250,000 homeless children were loaded onto trains in New York City, dropped into unfamiliar rural settings, and offered to farm families for adoption. Author Clark Kidder will tell the Dickensian story of his late grandmother, Emily Reese Kidder, who rode an orphan train to her destiny. Book sale and signing. There is nothing more convenient than doing your banking or making a purchase from the comfort of your home. However, venturing out on the Internet takes us away from the safety and security our home provides. Glenview Credit Union will discuss how to be prepared when facing the risks the Internet presents. The Landscape in ART — Through Wednesday, September 14. Multiple Artists: Sponsored by Amdur Productions. For over thirty years, Amdur Productions, a nationally acclaimed arts festival production company, has organized and directed many of the Midwest’s most prestigious juried art festivals, including the annual ART AT THE GLEN FESTIVAL. Soak in a contemplative selection of landscape artists in a community exhibit specially curated for the Library. Nature in Glenview: The Beauty Around Us — Friday, September 16–Wednesday, November 16. Multiple Artists: Co-sponsored by the Glenview Art League and Natural Resources Commission of Glenview. Glenview has a variety of natural resources to discover. We are fortunate to have rivers, woods, wetlands, and prairies to explore. Nature is as close as your own back door. Experience our hometown beauty through the eyes of talented local artists. Sculpture at Any Age — Tuesday, September, 20–Tuesday, November 15. Multiple Artists: North Shore Senior Center. The community art theme continues with a display by sculptors from ages 60 to 90, proving that creativity flourishes at any age. Working in a studio environment full of camaraderie and friendship, we invite you to enjoy the lively quality of their art.

These spirited musicians will bring their strings and more (fiddle, banjo, mandolin, flute, guitar, bass) to share their love of American musical traditions and welcome our fall program season. The tumultuous life of trumpeter Chet Baker, often called the “James Dean of Jazz,” is reimagined with wit, verve, and plenty of rhythm. GLENergy presents Senior Housing 101: Senior Care Types Explained — Friday, September 9, 1-2 PM, Community Room. With so many senior housing choices available, it’s easy to feel confused and overwhelmed by the number of care types and styles of senior living communities. It’s important to learn the terminology and the differences between senior care options that are out there so you can make the right choice for you or your family. The Legal Assistance Foundation Regional Ombudsman will discuss the levels of care for older adults and the steps to use when looking for a facility. CJE SeniorLife Counseling Appointments — Tuesday, September 27, 9:30 AM-Noon, Second Floor Study Room. 30-minute appointments. Do you have questions about retirement and health insurance options? CJE SeniorLife Resource Specialists provide counseling to adults 60 and over, their families, and caregivers. Counseling includes topics such as selecting appropriate retirement benefits, picking the right health insurance and Medicare programs, determining housing needs, and identifying supportive resources. Location: Hackney’s on Lake, 1514 E. Lake Avenue, Glenview. Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. A moving story of family, history, and the meaning of home. This novel explores the divisions between cultures and the rifts within a family and uncovers the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle all their lives to understand one another. Recalling the tragic event that occurred during his 13th year, a man discovers how a complex web of secrets, adultery, and betrayal devastated his Methodist family and their small 1961 Minnesota town. Native and non-native Spanish speakers are invited to join the fun while practicing language skills and expanding their love for Spanish/Latino culture. Staff will be available to talk about hot new titles and selections the Library’s book groups have been discussing. BOOKit! Nonfiction Book Group —Wednesday, September 28, 7 PM, Multipurpose Room. Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine, and the Miracle That Set Them Free by Hector Tobar. When a Chilean mine collapsed in 2010, 33 miners were buried underground beneath thousands of feet of rock for 69 days. Meanwhile, their families and the world waited to see whether the men would be rescued alive. Adult Literacy Classes: Fall Session — Registration: Thursday, September 1, 9:15 AM-12:15 PM. Classes: Tuesdays & Thursdays, September 6–December 8, 9:15 AM-12:15 PM (no class November 24). A unique opportunity for native and non-native English speakers to improve their reading and writing skills. A small, friendly group led by a teacher and volunteer tutors meets twice weekly.
