Calling All Glenview Readers: Read to the Rhythm Summer Reading Program — Sunday, June 14–Sunday, August 2. Jazz up your summer by joining the Library’s summer reading program for adults, teens, and kids. The Summer Reading Program is a Glenview Library annual tradition with nearly 3,000 kids, teens, and adults joining the excitement each year. In 2014, over 44,000 books were logged in! Glenview Library cardholders are invited to join reading clubs with special prizes and raffles for all ages. There’s even a club for infants, Baby Bop, to encourage early literacy. Starting with the Summer Reading Kick-Off Festival on Sunday, June 14, 1-4 PM, special themed programs will be offered throughout the summer reading season. Register for Summer Reading at the Kick-Off Festival or at the Youth or Reader Services Desks. Out and about around town? Visit us at the Summer Reading Table at the Glenview Park District’s popular Concerts at Jackman Park, on two Wednesdays, June 17 or July 15, 7-8:30 PM. NEW! Books, Movies, Music & Magazines: What’s All the hoopla About? — The Glenview Public Library is proud to announce hoopla, the newest addition to our downloadable services. hoopla is easy to use and allows you to check out and watch/listen to audiobooks, movies, TV shows, and music—up to five items per month FREE with your Glenview Public Library card. Summer Literacy Volunteer Opportunities — Openings are still available. Event Volunteers (grades 7-12) will assist with individual events and programs. S.T.A.R. The Unforgettable Story of Unbroken with Byron Kinney — Saturday, June 13, 1-3:30 PM, Community Room. The story of the best-selling book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, about the life of WWII P.O.W. survivor Louis Zamperini, is a riveting story of survival, suffering, salvation, and forgiveness. WWII Air Force B-29 pilot Byron Kinney will share his personal connection to this fascinating story via his mission to Japan, which was instrumental in saving 700 starving POWs—including Zamperini. Mr. Kinney will also speak about the continuing story of their relationship, especially during the past 25 years . In partnership with the North Suburban Genealogical Society. StoryWalk®: Pete the Cat and the New Guy by Kimberly and James Dean — Sunday, June 14–Sunday, August 2. Welcome back to the Storybook Trail in Little Bear Garden at Gallery Park, 2001 Patriot Blvd. Walk, skip, jog, or, better yet, bike along the storybook path to read a fan-favorite about Pete the Cat. Co-sponsored by the Glenview Park District and the Bike Glenview Initiative. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and was developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Friends of the Glenview Library Special Program: Rhododendrons in the Midwest—You Can’t Grow Them Here? — Wednesday, June 17, 12 PM. A festive buffet luncheon will be followed with a presentation by John Golab, President of the Midwest Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society. Golab lives in Inverness (Barrington) and has been growing rhododendrons there for thirty years. He will show stunning photographs of this flowering plant in his own gardens, in Illinois, and in the Midwest, and will give expert tips on how you can grow these beautiful flowering shrubs in your own gardens. $20/person includes luncheon. The Vitality of Spirit: Art at Any Age — Through Wednesday, July 8. Vi at The Glen’s art class was formed ten years ago by a group of resident artists whose common interest in the visual arts brought them together to share a passion and a desire to create their own unique style of art. The original group was led by Ruth Bremner, noted painter and dean of students at the Ray Vogue School of Art. The class was joined by other talented artists, some who had previously put art aside to raise families. All members of this eclectic, vibrant community of artists speak of the need to nurture their creative talents because of the vitality creating art brings to their lives.

During the week that the anniversary of D-Day is commemorated, learn how the men of the US 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions performed the most hazardous of military operations—dropping paratroopers into enemy territory at night. Register here. Dois no Choro! The Brazilian Beat — Tuesday, June 9, 7-8 PM, Community Room. Welcome the 2015 Summer Reading Program with a winning combination of words and music. Flutist Julie Koidin, accompanied on guitar by Paulinho Garcia, will introduce the unique sound of Choro music, the “New Orleans jazz of Brazil.” Julie is also the author of Choro Conversations: Pursuing Life, Love and Brazil’s Musical Identity. Articulit Theatre presents Voices of Chicago — Tuesday, June 16, 7-8 PM, Community Room. This unique theater company combines Art and Lit to enhance the written word. From the poignant to the whimsical, including works by Carl Sandburg, Archibald MacLeish, and Gwendolyn Brooks, the program ends with two pieces written by beloved songwriter Steve Goodman. A special performance sponsored by Heinen’s Grocery Store. Register here. The Mississippi Burning Case — Tuesday, June 23, 7-8 PM, Community Room. The 1964 brutal murders of three young civil rights workers, which inspired the movie Mississippi Burning, shocked the nation and lead to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The state of Mississippi, however, decided not to prosecute the murderers. 40 years later, Barry Bradford had the honor of working with an investigative reporter to reopen the case. Bernadette Fox, practically a shut-in, who’s hired a virtual assistant in India to remotely arrange every task, from hiring a gardener to planning the trip to Antarctica she’s promised her star-student daughter, Bee seems pretty crazy. But don’t be fooled. Suspicions that madcap Bernadette is as clever as her last name implies will be confirmed heartily. When she’s party to some unfortunate events, her erratic behavior leads her husband, Microsoft guru Elgin Branch, to commit her to a local mental-health facility. Baby Bop (birth-23 months) — Bounce, boogie, twist, and twirl with your baby while laying a foundation for reading success. Pick up a folder to register and get started on early literacy activities. Turn in completed folders from June 14–August 2 to receive your gift bag. Ludwig’s Lullabies (ages 2-5) — Ludwig Lion loves to listen to music before his nap. Can you help him fall asleep by playing some lullaby music? Spin the spinner to find your musical instrument. Read a book, come to the Library, and play the game. Win a prize each time you play. One turn per day, please. Read with the Rhythm (kindergarten-grade 5) — The Critter Hop marathon is in trouble. The dancers can’t hear the music to keep the beat. Cicadas are singing their hearts out and drowning out the band. Our heroes Bop, Boogie, and Harmony have been called in to catch the cicadas and pack them off to singing school. By reading books, you can keep the rhythm going and the band playing. Win a prize each time you play. One turn per day, please. Music Mayhem (grades 6-8) — It’s MAYHEM at the Library. Vinyl records are threatening the MP3s. It’s an all-out epic battle where hip-hop meets hippie, punk meets polka, dance beat meets disco, and Bollywood meets the blues. Vote for your favorite tunes and artists by reading books and completing challenges. Each time you play, enter your name in the weekly raffle for a $25 gift card to The Glen Town Center.
