Library Closing — The Library will close all day on Friday, February 24 for Staff Training Day. No materials are due on dates when the Library is closed. LAST MONTH! Socks for Soles — Help warm the soles of our community’s neediest this winter season. Nothing is more reassuring as winter sets in than warm feet, hands, and heads. Fill the collection bin in the Library Lobby with socks, mittens, gloves, hats, and sweaters. New items appreciated—all sizes for all ages. Collected items are distributed by St. Philip’s Clothes Closet on behalf of the Northfield Township Pantry throughout the winter season

What Every Parent Should Know — Wednesday, February 22, 7-8:30 PM, Community Room. Attorneys Nichole M. Waltz and Mildred V. Palmer will discuss parents’ legal rights, responsibilities, and limitations for tweens, teens, and young adults to age 25. Topics include protecting your right to parent through powers of attorney and HIPAA authorizations, disability and divorce, and preparing for life’s “what-ifs” through guardianship and trusts. Urbanscape: The City As I See It — January 11–March 15. Gallery Talk: Sunday, February 12, 1:15 PM, Library Lobby. Artist: Kathleen Eaton, eatonart.com. Kathleen Eaton is a Chicago area artist whose work is an interpretation of city and suburban life. Her art reflects a fascination with architectural spaces and the unexpected solitude or human activities that occur in them. The paintings begin with an idea of a place, real or imaginary, and then proceed, by a series of sketches, to full-sized drawings, from which the final oil paintings emerge.

The Chicago 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition: What Remains & New Links to H.H. Holmes — Saturday, February 11, 1-3 PM, Community Room. Local historian and former criminal investigator Ray Johnson discusses the legacy of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, including relics that remain and previously undiscovered links to “The Devil” Dr. H.H. Holmes. In partnership with the North Suburban Genealogical Society. Register here. Meet the Chicago Maritime Museum — Sunday, February 12, 2-3 PM, Community Room. Chicago’s history stems from its strategic location at the foot of the Great Lakes. One of Chicago’s newest museum jewels, the Chicago Maritime Museum, is devoted to this important aspect of Chicago’s development. Bill Derrah will introduce you to the museum’s architecture, display design, and mission...then share the importance of the canoe in our city’s growth. Did you know that Chicago is home to a Maritime Music Festival? Join singer, actor, and sailor Tom Kastle for a performance, in song and story, of the amazing maritime traditions of Chicago and the Great Lakes. Tom is a co-founder of the Chicago Maritime Festival, faculty member of the Old Town School of Folk Music, and has captained tall ships on the Great Lakes. Register here.

The Light Between Oceans (133min/PG-13/2016) — Sunday, February 26, 1:30 PM, Community Room.Living off the coast of Western Australia, a lighthouse keeper (Michael Fassbender) and his wife (Alicia Vikander) raise a baby they rescue from a drifting boat. A drama about fate, love, moral dilemmas and the lengths to which a couple will go to see their dreams realized.

Melissa Versch, LCSW, North Shore Senior Center Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) Coordinator and Clinical Supervisor, will discuss Medicare and the changes in 2017. This is a wonderful opportunity for those new to Medicare, as well as for those who have been enrolled for many years. The O’Briens are an Irish Catholic family living in Boston. All Things Spanish — Wednesday, February 15, 7-8:30 PM, Multipurpose Room. Native and non-native Spanish speakers are invited to join the fun while practicing language skills and expanding their love for Spanish/Latino culture. Adult Literacy Classes: Spring Session — Tuesdays & Thursdays, through May 11, 9:15 AM-12:15 PM. A unique opportunity for native and non-native English speakers to improve their reading and writing skills. A small, friendly group led by a teacher and volunteer tutors meets twice weekly.
