Author Talk: Dr. Terry Maple Professor in Residence, Jacksonville Zoo and GardensWednesday, Dec. 14, 6 – 7:30 p.m Main Library, Hicks Auditorium Dr. Terry Maple, world renown zoological leader and university scholar, discusses his latest book, Professor in the Zoo: Designing the Future for Wildlife in Human Care. As CEO of Zoo Atlanta, Maple transformed the zoo into one of the most innovative zoos in the world. His research on the construct of wellness has provided opportunities to design zoos of exceptional quality where animals are encouraged to thrive. He will feature songs traditionally played on a kora, as well as some of his own compositions. Artists: Design a Poster for Jax Book Fest. You could win $500. (Poster Contest Deadline: Dec. 9, 2016) Authors: Find out how you can be an exhibitor. On March 25, 2017, the library will host its first-ever Jax Book Fest—a celebration of written word for all ages with children's authors and illustrators, zine creators, young poets, and local Florida authors. We're asking local artists to submit original designs for a poster we'll use to promote the event. The poster contest deadline is Dec. 9, 2016. The winner will take home a $500 cash prize. We're also inviting local authors who are interested in showcasing their work or selling books to fill out an exhibitor booth application. Choose from three tracks: Basic Computer Literacy, MS Office 2010 Basics, and Digital Media and Design Basics. Participants complete five required and three elective classes within six months. The certificate serves as proof of attendance only, and does not certify technical skills. Find details in the computer class catalog. That's why the library is rallying the entire community to develop a healthy reading habit by reading just 15 minutes a day for 66 consecutive days. Children, teens and adults can track reading on Reading Trackers to earn badges and prizes and attend a party.
