.... bring along cookies or other goodies to share and those who assist in setting up and clearing away at our meetings. John F. and Pat and Al B. helped at the last couple of meetings in 2014. Your contribution at that time is particularly helpful as it allows me to wrap things up with the presenter and/or other participants and not face the cleanup alone afterwards, and IS noticed and valued, even when I don't say Thank You in person or in public. We relax and enjoy learning with new and old friends with something to nibble on and our coffee or tea.

March certainly came in like the proverbial lion, but spring can't be too far behind. Meantime we can perhaps use a few extra "cooped up inside" hours to sort through family history items and work on the legacy we will leave for our descendants. The March meeting will have wonderful ideas in that regard. The Family History Interest Group (FHIG) at Bernards Township Library exists to inspire and encourage you as you seek to learn about the wondrous lives of your forebears. This newsletter is the place to find information about upcoming and past FHIG meetings, news and notes about related topics, and ideas, tips and suggestions for your own genealogy searches. -- Ruth

Tuesday, March 24 Will your collection of digitized material be readable when your great grandchildren finally get interested? Join Sara Weissman, who has taught genealogy classes at and authored four local history finding guides for Morris County Library, for a frank discussion about pulling your family papers and photos together into a photobook that can be put together online with scanned and uploaded pictures, documents, etc. in a format that will last. - She’ll cover common questions like:
- how to sort?
- to scan or not to scan?
- correct items or leave them as found?
- how and with what service to publish?
Time permitting, we'll conclude with an open research Question & Answer session. Bring your own photobook if you've done one and would like to show others.

Video presentations from RootsTech 2015 The streamed versions of Keynote speeches and classes from RootsTech 2015, held in Salt Lake City from February 11-14 were intriguing, and supplemented by first hand reports from Russ Worthington, who attended in-person. If you missed the meeting last week, or would like to explore more on your own go to https://rootstech.org/video/4050134760001 This is the archive site for the various recorded presentations. If you don't have high speed internet at home you should be able to watch in the Library as long as you have a set of earbuds for the sound. We watched the keynote with Dennis Brimhall, currently the managing director of the Family History Department for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, starting 31 minutes into the video and ending at just under 49 minutes. He demonstrates the Joy of Discovery in The Contemporary Museum of Me - quite intriguing! We also watched the class "Bring Your Ancestors Back to the Future." by self-described Family Historian, Genealogist, and Kin Keeper, Anne Leishman who is a member of the BYU class of 2015. Her handout is attached here. There are a number of other presentations on that page that are equally interesting and informative. It wasn't easy to choose what we would watch together! Our own FHIG member Russ Worthington showed us some fascinating photographs from the conference and talked about other resources. The links below will allow you to follow-up on things he mentioned: Click here for explanation and details of his adventures with DearMYRTLE and the various Google hangout sessions they do throughout the week. Genealogy and the Law: A Guide to Legal Sources for the Family Historian by Kay Haviland Freilich and William B. Freilich (Arlington, Virginia: National Genealogical Society, 2014).
