SUMMER ROCKS IN URBANDALE! SATURDAY, JUNE 2nd, 10:00 AM-12:00 NOON Join us for a celebratory event to kick off the Urbandale Public Library's summer reading program for kids and adults - as well as highlight other summer programming and events taking place in Urbandale (and around the metro area). This event will feature: - A variety of activities for kids and adults (including a magician/balloon artist, continual storytime, music, etc.). - Performances by the Urbandale Community Adult Band - An opportunity for both kids and adults to sign up for the summer reading program - The unveiling of the first-ever All Urbandale Reads book for adults - Special programming from the Grout Museum - And more!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Interactive Movie Tuesday, June 12th at 6:00 PM Voldemort is back and Harry must begin his journey to destroy one of the darkest wizards in history. Everyone 18 and up is welcome to join the hunt for the horcruxes in this interactive movie event! There are dangers inside the castle this year as well, someone is using dark magic to harm students. Practice your jinxes, antidotes, and counter curses...you're sure to need them. Make sure to bring a snack. I hear Horace Slughorn enjoys crystallized pineapple if you're keen on being in the slug club. On second thought, a bezoar might come in handy. Art UP Close Landscape Photography Saturday, June 16th at 3:30 PM Join photographer Larry Mendenhall, the Urbandale Public Library's Art UP Close Resident Artist, as he shares his expertise on taking landscape photographs. We'll start off in the Library's Meeting Room A, then head outdoors to the walking trails in Walker Johnston Park to take photos. Attendees should bring their own cameras, sunscreen, bug spray, and wear comfortable shoes for walking. Please register online or by calling 515-278-3945. Thursday, June 28th at 6:00 PM Whiplash (R/107 min.) 2014 A promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential. Age 17 and up, please. Adult Coloring/Active Adults Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 AM (No Active Adults June 14, 2018) Adult Coloring is now part of Active Adults! Join other adults at this adult drop-in program on Thursdays for board games, coloring, puzzles, crafts, and more! Friday FlicksFridays at 1:00 PM Join other adults at an afternoon matinee! Adult Recreational Chess Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM The library offers an adult recreational chess club for people of all skill levels, even beginners! This is your chance to learn the game, play the game, and meet other people interested in the game. Chess sets provided, or bring your own. Adult Book Clubs Booked for Dinner meets in Meeting Room A on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM. On the Same Page meets in the Library Conference Room on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM. Brown Bag meets in Meeting Room A on the last Tuesday & Thursday of each month at 12:00 Noon.

Mondays, June 4th - July 23 at 6:00 PM In this 8-week course, kids ages 10-14 will learn the basics of computer science as they work with Scratch coding to play musical notes, create a music video, and more! No prior knowledge is necessary but projects are cumulative, so plan on attending most sessions. Questions? Contact jstolz@urbandale.org Target Audience: Ages 10 - 14 ONLY. Please register online or by calling 515-278-3945. Laser Tag Friday, June 8th at 7:00 PM Teens age 12-17 can join the Laser Tag battle and bring your Nerf Blaster for an epic Nerf War! Registration required for this after-hours event. A signed permission slip must be presented at the time of the event. Target Audience: Ages 12-17 ONLY Adults must drop teens off in the meeting room at 7 PM and pick up teens at the front doors at 9 PM. All teens must be signed in and out by a parent or pre-approved adult. No one will be allowed to leave the building alone. Please let us know about any allergies, dietary restrictions, or other issues which might affect your child’s participation by contacting jgoulden@urbandale.org. We will be as accommodating as possible! Ceramic Monstrosities Wednesday, June 13th at 5:00 PM Teens age 12-17 are invited to design, create, and paint your own adorable and/or terrifying ceramic monster made from air dry clay. Ages 12-17 ONLY Quilting Class Monday, June 18th or Tuesday, June 19th at 10:00 AM Sign up for one session Want to learn how to make a quilt? If you are 10 -17 years old, come to the Library for the day and go home with a finished quilt that will be great for snuggling while watching TV. Members of the Des Moines Area Quilt Guild will be here to provide all the sewing machines, supplies, and help you will need. Bring a sack lunch. Target Age: 10 - 17 ONLY Mug Masterpieces Meals Wednesday, June 20th at 5:30 PM Teens age 12-17 will make a 3-course microwavable mug masterpiece meal while learning quick, easy cooking techniques. Friday, June 22nd at 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM Teens age 12-17 will work with a team (register solo or in a group) to solve clues, crack the vault, and grab the mysterious, priceless artifact in 45 minutes or less. Please note: Children ages 9 and under must be accompanied by an adult at our programs. Minecraft Tuesdays, 4:00 - 5:00 PM Kids of all ages are encouraged to test their Minecraft skills on the Youth Services computers and with console games. Adults should plan on staying with participants age 9 and under. Ages 6-17. No registration. History Rocks Thursdays in June at 3:00 PM Kids ages 7-12 will explore a different element of Iowa History each week presented by Living History Farms. Registration is required and participants must register for each week they will attend. Ages 7-12 only. Please register online or by calling 515-278-3945. Get WiSE Science Thursday, June 7th, 6:00 PM Ages 7- 12 will explore hands-on science with the Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) at Iowa State University. While siblings are welcome to attend, please note that the concepts discussed will be difficult for children under the age of 6 to grasp. Please register each child who will participate. Mad Mixture Friday, June 8th at 2:00 PM There’s something to thrill every mad scientist when the Grout Museum combines their most exciting experiments dealing with food, fire, ice, and even snakes! Fridays, June 8, 15, 22, 29 at 10:00 AM Junior Paleontologists get hands on with activities and stories about prehistoric creatures. Every Friday in June we'll get the dirt on dinos with discussion and activities perfect for ages 4-8. Adults should plan on attending and assisting! The Greatest Showman: Interactive Movie Thursday, June 14th at 11:30 AM or 6:00 PM You’ve seen the Greatest Showman, now experience it in a whole new way. An interactive showing for the whole family. Sing along with the actors, eat popcorn, and do other well-timed hands-on activities that will make you feel like a part of the show! The Hansen Family Juggling Variety show will blow you away! Touch a Truck Saturday, June 16th, 10:00 - 11:00 AM Fire engines, garbage trucks, snowplows, and semis – a parking lot full of trucks for you to explore. Thursdays at 9:00 AM It’s a music and movement program for the preschool set! With a chance for stretching, singing, dancing, and instruments, we’ll keep you moving through each song! Book Babies Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:00 AM Bounce, sing, shake, and play with us at this “can’t sit still” story time! We’ll have 20-30 minutes of interactive programming, followed by an unstructured playtime where children and caregivers can interact with their peers! Toddler Time Mondays and Tuesdays at 10:00 AM This short-attention span story time is perfect for toddlers. We’ll share short books, rhymes, and music. This 20-30 minute story time incorporates movement and music and understands that sitting still is tricky sometimes! Family Story Time -Wednesdays at 9:30 AM and 10:15 AM -Tuesdays at 7:00 PM Join us for fun and interactive stories to keep the whole family entertained and engaged. The program will last approximately 30 minutes and will include slightly longer stories, singing, and playing!
