Great American Read Watch Parties Tuesday, October 2nd, 7:00 PM, Episode 4, Villains and Monsters Learn why literature’s most notorious villains began behaving badly. Many weren’t born evil, but became that way when faced with some of the same choices we make every day. See what these villains can teach us about our own dark impulses. Tuesday, October 9th, 7:00 PM, Episode 5, What We Do For Love Fall in love with some of literature’s most beautiful romances and explore the many forms of love, from family to passion to the unrequited type. Learn how America’s best-loved novels reflect the things we do for love. Tuesday, October 16th, 7:00 PM, Episode 6, Other Worlds Take a magical journey to another world through some of America’s best-loved novels. From Middle Earth to Lilliput, the trials and tribulations of these alternate universes help us to better understand our own world. Tuesday, October 23rd, 7:00 PM, Grand Finale America's best-loved novel is revealed! Art Gallery Reception Sunday, October 7th, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM At 2:30 PM, Adults are invited to stay for a showing of the movie Pollock (R/122min.) 2000, a film about the life and career of the American painter, Jackson Pollock. *Life Stories Memoir Program Thursday, October 18th at 6:00 PM Did a special book impact your life? Let's write about it! Inspired by The Great American Read initiative, join us for a special 90-minute session of the Life Stories Memoir Program focused on capturing your memories of your favorite books. We'll spend time reviewing The Great American Read list of 100 Best-Loved Books in America, reminisce about our memories of those and other favorite books, discuss the joys of reading, and record those memories into short memoirs to share with future generations. You'll also have a chance to have your photo taken with your favorite book from the 100 Best-Loved Books in America list! (If your favorite book isn't on the list, please bring a copy with you!) Participants are encouraged to read and reflect on these writing prompts prior to this event to inspire your thinking and stir your memories! Join The Restricted Section and the Urbandale Library as they set out to help and find some Fantastic Beasts at our interactive movie screening. ‘No majs’, wizards, witches and Muggles are invited to bring items to care for our world fantastic beasts. View the livestream at our Library. Wednesday, October 31st at 6:00 PM Movie night for adults has been moved to Wednesday this month due to the Trunk or Treat event at the Urbandale Police Department. Join us for a showing of Frankenstein in which an obsessed scientist assembles a living being from parts of exhumed corpses. (NR/70 min.) 1931. The movie showing will be followed by facilitated discussion. Age 18 and up, please. Active Adults Thursday October 4 & 11 from 9:30 to 11:30 AM NO ACTIVE ADULTS OCTOBER 18 & 25. * Followed by a facilitated discussion. Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM The library offers an adult recreational chess club for people of all skill levels, even beginners! This is your chance to learn the game, play the game, and meet other people interested in the game. Chess sets provided, or bring your own. Adult Book Clubs Booked for Dinner meets in Meeting Room A on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM. On the Same Page meets in the Library Conference Room on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM. Brown Bag meets in Meeting Room A on the last Tuesday & Thursday of each month at 12:00 Noon.

Volunteen Meeting Saturday, October 6th at 11:30 AM Interested in volunteering this September, October - November? Attend this orientation to learn more! Returning Summer Volunteens are encouraged to attend as well. What we’ll ask of you: -All new volunteens will be asked to complete an application, and volunteers ages 16-18 will be required to undergo a background check. Parents must sign both forms before volunteers can begin volunteering. -Teens will be asked to work at least 6 hours total between September, October, and November. -Teens will be asked to register for text and/or email notifications through Remind to learn about upcoming shifts and communicate with library staff. Parents may choose to receive notifications as well. -You’ll help with programs, clean toys, prep crafts, and help with other projects after school and/or weekends. We’ll provide a list of available shifts, and you’ll sign up for shifts that work for you. *Harry Potter After Hours Friday, October 12th at 5:30 PM This is a LOCK-IN event. Harry Potter Fans (ages 12-17) will get a chance to make their own wands, consume magical treats, and compete for the house cup. All participants must be signed in and out by a parent or pre-approved adult. All participants must be signed in between 5:30 and 5:45 PM in the meeting room and adults must pick up participants at the front doors at 8:00 PM. No one will be allowed to leave the building alone. Please let us know about any allergies, dietary restrictions, or other issues which might affect your child's participation by contacting jgoulden@urbandale.org. We will be as accommodating as possible. Target audience: Ages 12-17 ONLY. *Teen T-Shirt Splatter Paint Thursday, October 18th at 6:00 PM Splatter Paint like a pro! Artist in Residence, Jim Osborn, will lead teens, ages 12-17, in a splatter paint activity inspired by the style of Jackson Pollock. Come ready to get messy and make wearable art that you can take home! *Registration preferred: Let us know what size t-shirt you wear and we will provide you with one (plain white), or bring your own. Please note: Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult at our programs. *Crazy 8s Math Club Tuesday, October 2, 9, 16 & 23 at 4:30 PM Crazy 8s is an after-school math club for 1st and 2nd graders designed to get them fired up about math. Every week Crazy 8ers build stuff, run and jump, make music, make a mess...all while bonding with new friends over math. Lessons build on each other, so please plan on attending the majority of events. We'll cover topics ranging from geometry and measuring to telling time and addition. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Target audience: 1st - 2nd grade. *Please register each week online or call 278-3945. *Social Media from Scratch Wednesday, October 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31 at 5:30 PM In this 8-week course, kids ages 10-14 will learn the basics of computer science as they work with Scratch to design social games, apps, and animations to share with friends, family and the community. Learn how to use technology to be social and have fun! No previous computer science is necessary. Projects are cumulative, so please plan on attending most weeks! * Registration required. Target Audience: Ages 10 – 14. *After School Art Monday, October 8th at 4:30 PM Join us at our new time! Get hands-on with art exploration. This 30-minute workshop will unleash your creativity and inspire the artist in everyone with process-driven art projects! We'll be moving, playing, and working as a group to create together. At this art program we play and make memories, but projects are not always able to be transported home. Come ready to get messy! Adults should plan on staying with participants ages 9 and under. Target Audience: Ages 6-12, siblings welcome. *Please register online or by calling 515-278-3945. Please register each child who will participate. *Homeschool Program Tuesday, October 9th at 2:00 PM Homeschoolers explore different types of writing. This month we're getting literal. We'll talk about how computer programmers use language and writing to create video games, and practice precision in language. Participants will also get a chance to write the rules to their own card games. We'll also share information on resources for learning computer coding. This program is most appropriate for elementary and middle school aged students. An adult must accompany children under 10. Prerequisites: Students must have some basic typing and writing skills. Target Audience: Ages 7-17, siblings welcome. Nostalgia Movie Night - The Goonies (PG) Thursday, October 11th at 5:30 PM The perfect chance to share an old favorite as a family. Discover a treasure together as we watch The Goonies. This movie is rated PG. Target audience: All Ages. An adult must accompany children under 10. No registration. *CultureALL Experiences Friday, October 19th at 4:30 PM Explore another culture and learn something new at this after-school event! Take a hands-on musical tour of Mexico with CultureALL amabassador R.J. Hernandez. Participants will learn the names of the different rhythms from each region of the country and have a chance to try various types of guitars and percussion instruments. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Target Audience: Ages 6-17, siblings welcome. *Frankencookies Saturday, October 20th at 1:00 PM Participants will have a chance to turn store-bought cookies into something monstrously cute in a few simple steps. Learn how to make vampires, ghosts, and Frankenstein’s monster. Cookies may contain allergens, and we cannot guarantee that cross-contamination will not occur. Fire Safety Day Monday, October 22nd, 10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon October is Fire Safety Month and it’s time to talk about fire safety with the Urbandale Public Library, Blank Children’s Hospital, and the Urbandale Fire Department. The Fire Safety House will be on hand to offer hands-on learning to prepare children for the unexpected and frightening experience of a fire. Drop in between 10 AM and 12:00 Noon to explore the fire safety house and talk to members of the Urbandale Fire Department. Target Age: 6 – 12 (siblings welcome). No Registration Drop-in Halloween Crafts Monday, October 22nd, 12:00 Noon - 4:00 PM Stop by our storytime room to make some spooky (but not scary) crafts! We will have directions and supplies for three different crafts. Work at your own pace to make one, two, or all three. Activities are self-led, while supplies last. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration.

Fridays, October 5, 12, 19 & 26 at 10:00 AM It’s a music and movement program for the preschool set! With a chance for stretching, singing, dancing, and instruments, we’ll keep you moving through each song! Ages 2-7, siblings welcome! No registration. *Junior Illustrators Thursday, October 18th at 10:00 AM Children ages 3-7 will explore the work of illustrators both familiar and new. We'll share a short lesson including a story and step-by-step art activity than expands on the book and /or illustration style. This month we'll be talking about Denise Fleming! Book Babies -Monday, October 1, 8, 15 & 29 at 9:00 AM -Tuesday, October 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 at 9:00 AM -Saturday, October 6 & 20 at 9:30 AM Bounce, sing, shake, and play with us at this “can’t sit still” story time! We’ll have 20-30 minutes of interactive programming, followed by an unstructured playtime where children and caregivers can interact with their peers! Toddler Time -Monday, October 1, 8, 15 & 29 at 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM -Tuesday, October 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 at 10:00 AM & 10:30 AM This short-attention span story time is perfect for toddlers. We’ll share short books, rhymes, and music. This 20-30 minute story time incorporates movement and music and understands that sitting still is tricky sometimes! Family Story Time -Wednesday, October 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31 at 9:30 AM and 10:15 AM -Tuesday, October 2, 9, 16 & 23 at 7:00 PM - Saturday, October 6 & 20 at 10:30 AM Join us for fun and interactive stories to keep the whole family entertained and engaged. The program will last approximately 30 minutes and will include slightly longer stories, singing, and playing!
