Master Gardener Summer Webcast Series Monday, July 1st and 8th at 1:00 PM Explore gardening topics at the Library! Free and open to gardeners of all levels. July 1: Gardening Plus Diversity 1:00 - 2:00 PM. Give Your Garden Wings 2:15 - 3:15 PM. July 8: Gardening FAQ 1:00 - 2:00 PM. Managing Vegetable Pests 2:15 - 3:15 PM. The Public Sunday, July 14th at 6:00 PM Libraries across the metro have partnered for this special screening of The Public (PG-13/122 min./2018). Doors open at the Urbandale Public Library at 5:30 PM, seating is limited. FREE with a suggested donation of canned protein, soup, and/or peanut butter to benefit the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus. Dolls are Timeless Tuesday, July 16th at 6:30 PM Join the Sun Bonnet Doll Club and the Iowa Kate Shelley Doll Club as they discuss their doll display “Dolls are Timeless” which can be seen in the Library's lobby display case for the month of July. Come to learn about the United Federation of Doll Clubs, local clubs, and how much fun doll collecting can be. This event does not include doll appraisals. Urbandale Community Adult Band Concert Thursday, July 18th at 6:30 PM Enjoy a free summer band concert outside the library, presented by the Urbandale Community Adult Band. In case of rain, the concert will be held inside the library. Thursday Night Movie Thursday, July 25th at 6:00 PM Join us this summer for new and classic movies about outer space that align with our Summer Reading Program theme, "A Universe of Stories." For adults ages 18+. Art Gallery Reception Sunday, July 28th, 1:30 - 3:00 PM Meet artist, Dennis Reynolds, whose work is on display in the Library's Art Gallery June 15 through July 31. Dennis Reynolds enjoys creating art that explores a deeper understanding of people and our perception of places (sometimes underappreciated or common place). You can often see in his paintings a desire to blur the lines between specific subject matter and abstract colors and forms. Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 AM Join other adults at this adult drop-in program on Wednesdays for board games, coloring, puzzles, crafts, and more! Friday FlicksFridays at 1:00 PM Join other adults at an afternoon matinee! This summer we will be showing new and classic movies about outer space that align with our Summer Reading Program theme, "A Universe of Stories". Adult Recreational ChessSaturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM The library offers an adult recreational chess club for people of all skill levels, even beginners! This is your chance to learn the game, play the game, and meet other people interested in the game. Chess sets provided, or bring your own. Adult Book Clubs Brown Bag meets on the last Tuesday & Thursday of each month at 12:00 Noon.

Friday, July 12th at 3:00 PM Teens 12-17 can learn soldering basics and develop skills you can use for electronics, robotics, coding, and other DIY projects. Because we'll be using very hot tools, all participants must have a signed permission slip. Please print a permission form, have it signed by your parent / guardian, and bring it to the event. Note: Project may include flashing LEDs, please follow up with Jacque at 331-6883 if you have health concerns such as epilepsy. Ages 12-17 ONLY. Teen DIY: Ceramic Aliens Wednesday, July 17th at 5:00 PM Teens age 12-17 are invited to design, create, and paint their own out-of-this world visitor from another planet, made from air dry clay. Make it eerie or cute, friendly or menacing, you decide! Ages 12-17 ONLY. Each teen who will participate must register online or by calling 515-278-3945. Teen STEAM and Ice Cream Party Wednesday, July 31st at 6:00 PM Come for the ice cream, stay for the STEAM! Art from Scratch Monday, July 8, 15, 22 & 29 at 6:00 PM In this 8-week course, kids ages 10-14 will learn the basics of computer science as they work with Scratch to create animations, interactive artwork, photograph filters, and other exciting artistic projects! Mission Makerspace Tuesday, July 9, 16, 23 & 30 at 3:00 PM Drop in for engineering challenges that are out of this world. Each week you’ll find yourself in the role of astronaut or NASA engineer, and you’ll find a creative way to solve the problem. We'll have different projects each week for a variety of ages. Please note, not all projects will appeal to all ages. Projects are while supplies last. Target Audience: 6-14. Please register for each week you will attend. Register online or by calling 515-278-3945. 4-H Food, Culture, & Literacy Wednesday, July 10, 17, 24, 31 at 10:00 AM Come learn about foods from various cultural backgrounds! We will explore foods from Mexico, Russia, Greece, Kenya, Japan, and the United States. Learn about the food groups, healthy eating habits, and how to live a healthy lifestyle. Don’t forget, come with an empty belly because we will create and sample the foods discussed in the books we read. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.Target Audience: Ages 7-12. Fridays in July, we'll get the dirt on dinos with discussion and activities perfect for ages 4-8. Adults should plan on attending and assisting! Target Age: 4-8 years. Cosmic Dance Party Thursday, July 11th at 6:00 PM Come dressed in your best and ready to move. We'll have a galactic good time at this dance party. Register online or by calling 515-278-3945. Thursday, July 25th at 6:00 PM In this simulation, you’ll learn how the best of the best work together to do the extraordinary! Work together, make decisions, and see what you can do! Families will play a game that steps through a human mission to Mars, to learn about the variety of people on the ground supporting missions, and the factors that can affect a mission outcome. Not all missions will be successful, but you are welcome to attempt multiple missions, time permitting. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Target Audience: All ages. Space Explorers with the Grout Museum Friday, July 26th at 2:00 PM This hands-on science exploration puts you in the driver’s seat! Discover what it’s like to be an astronaut in this hands-on workshop! Participants will get the chance to experience multiple activities designed to sharpen critical thinking skills and encourage teamwork. Use a robotic arm to move objects like a rover, launch a rocket, build a space lander, and more! Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult! Please register EACH PERSON who will attend. Thursday July 11, 18, & 25 at 9:00 AM It’s a music and movement program for the preschool set! With a chance for stretching, singing, dancing, and instruments, we’ll keep you moving through each song! Ages 2-7, siblings welcome! Plan on attending and participating with your child. Please register each child who will participate.

Please note: No story times July 1 - 5 Book Babies Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:00 AM Bounce, sing, shake, and play with us at this “can’t sit still” story time! We’ll have 20-30 minutes of interactive programming, followed by an unstructured playtime where children and caregivers can interact with their peers! Toddler Time Mondays and Tuesdays at 10:00 AM This short-attention span story time is perfect for toddlers. We’ll share short books, rhymes, and music. This 20-30 minute story time incorporates movement and music and understands that sitting still is tricky sometimes! Family Story Time Mondays and Tuesdays at 10:45 AM Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM Join us for fun and interactive stories to keep the whole family entertained and engaged. The program will last approximately 30 minutes and will include slightly longer stories, singing, and playing!
