Sammons Small Business Center Grand Opening Launched with a generous grant from Sammons Enterprises, Inc., the Sammons Small Business Center opened last month on the 5th floor of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in downtown Dallas. Library Director Jo Giudice, Controller at Sammons Enterprises, Inc. Sue Myers, Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Sammons Enterprises, Inc. Linda Newman, and City of Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the Sammons Small Business Center. The mission of the center is to support entrepreneurs seeking to create small businesses in the City of Dallas and beyond. The space offers computers, business software applications, database tools and a collection of print and digital books and magazines to support small business research and development. Software specifically designed to support business development include BusinessPlan Pro, a tool that aids in the creation of a business plan, Marketing and Sales Pro which guides you through the process of creating a basic marketing plan, and ESRI ArcDesktop, an industry leading Geographic Information System (GIS) software. Visitors can utilize the space for meetings, borrow a laptop to conduct Skype interviews and business-related communication, and scan documents free of charge on a new EnvisionWare Library Document Station. The document station is capable of saving information to a USB drive or sending scans to a smartphone or cloud-based account like Google Drive or SkyDrive. In partnership with nonprofit community development lenders, business assistance centers and others, the Sammons Small Business Center will also host regular hands-on classes and informative presentations on business development. Mayor's Summer Reading Club Wrap Up We all had fun with the Mayor's Summer Reading Club this summer! Remember that the last day to log your reading and to pick up prizes is Saturday, August 2nd. Prizes are available while supplies last, so head to your local library today!

Every Child Ready to Read Workshop at the Arcadia Park Branch Library 4 Sessions from Monday August 11 through Thursday August 14 at 1:30 pm Learn how to help your child be ready to read in this 4-session, interactive workshop. Classes are everyday at 1:30 pm from Monday through Thursday starting August 11th. Training sessions will include "Overview of Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights and Trade Secrets", "Conducting a Preliminary U.S. Patent Search Using USPTO Databases", "Conducting a Preliminary Federal Trademark Search Using USPTO Databases", "PubWEST and PubEAST: Patent Databases for Power Searchers", and "Invention Promotion Firms: Asking the Right Questions".
