The Moon's Influence The Moon influences many phenomena on Earth, such as tides. But, our satellite impacts North Texas wildlife even more directly. Coyotes vocalize more when there is no moonlight than during a full moon, presumably because of lower visibility. Rabbits reduce their activity on brighter moon nights, and, as a result, their predators are less active during the full moon too. Research by Mike Pingleton, author of The Field Herping Guide: Finding Amphibians and Reptiles in the Wild, suggests that increased snake activity is more closely tied to moon phases when the Moon rises later in the night. Research shows that some plants also sync their life cycles in accordance with the Moon. Pollination coincides when the nocturnal pollinators, such as moths, are most active, during the full moon. |

The Field Herping Guide : Finding Amphibians and Reptiles in the Wild
by Mike Pingleton
Herping is the observation of amphibians and reptiles for recreation or for the production of citizen science―the cold-blooded equivalent of birding. The guide addresses basic questions new field herpers have about amphibians and reptiles: What do I need to know about their biology? Where do I look for them, and when? These topics are covered in a straightforward manner, with images, a glossary of essential terms, personal anecdotes, and informational vignettes that support the subject material.
