Bilingual Spanish-English Early Literacy Programming Coming to PLS
Starting in early 2016, Pioneer Library System will reach out to area residents whose first language is Spanish!
Florencia Briglie, a native Spanish speaker with a background in early childhood development, will present a program monthly at each branch library or in a community served by the Pioneer Library System. Florencia has worked for Success By Six in Cleveland County and provides early literacy programs in the Oklahoma City school system.
The bilingual programs in the library will be open to babies and children up to 5 years of age and their caregivers regardless of language preference. Siblings are welcome too! The special outreach program in various communities will be provided primarily to Spanish-speaking families to acquaint them with library services.
Check the program calendar on the library web page or in the WORD magazine, or call your local library for these programs in your area.
Anonymous Donor Benefits GLAR
A very generous anonymous donor has funded the printing and restocking of all Growing Like a Read giveaways! In addition, this donation will fund new early literacy initiatives including:
the translation of GLAR materials into Spanish and the printing of those items
a supply of giveaway books when young children get their first library card, the My Card
bilingual Spanish-English programs at every PLS branch library
additional downloadable digital titles through OverDrive and
giveaway books when children reach their summer reading program goals
This extraordinary windfall will benefit early literacy in Cleveland, McClain and Pottawatomie counties for the next three years.
If you have not received a GLAR tote bag, Stand-Up Book of Nursery Rhymes, Nursery Rhyme CD, or board book a supply is now available at your hometown library. Ask your Children’s Librarian about them today. One set per family please, so we can make sure we reach more children.
If you would prefer GLAR materials in Spanish, please check with your branch librarian in 2016. The materials are being translated now.
