Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes (to Our Library Management Software!)
By the end of the year, Phillipsburg Library will be introducing a new software package to manage our online catalog and our system for registering patrons and for checking material in and out. The new system is called Koha, and is part of the exciting and growing open-source movement in library automation. What does this mean to you? The online catalog you use to find items and to place requests will look different, but not drastically so. All the functions you have come to expect will be present – the ability to place requests online, to check your account, and to renew material. If you have questions about how to use the new system, library staff will be ready assist you in person, on the telephone or by email. As we prepare to migrate to the new system, the Library will implement periodic down times. We expect to close for staff training for a half day in December. We appreciate your patience during this transition and assure you that this necessary housekeeping will help us bring you a robust, full-featured library system in 2019 and beyond.

Our New Microfilm Reader Is Here!
The future meets the past as we debut our new state-of-the-art ScanPro microfilm reader. As any genealogist or historian knows, the Internet is only the tip of the iceberg when doing local history research. Our new reader/printer allows you not only to view and print articles from the Free Press and the Phillipsburger, but lets you refine the image for the greatest legibility and lets you save your discoveries to a PDF file. It is easy to use - our librarians can teach you how to load the film - and puts a treasurer trove of local history at your fingertips. We thank those who donated to the library in honor of our late Board President, Richard Buralli, and the following generous donors who helped make the purchase of our new reader possible:

Happy Bookers: Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk Wednesday, November 28, 7:00pm It’s the last day of 1984, and 85-year-old Lillian Boxfish is about to take a walk. As she traverses a grittier Manhattan, a city anxious after an attack by a still-at-large subway vigilante, she encounters bartenders, bodega clerks, chauffeurs, security guards, bohemians, criminals, children, parents, and parents-to-be—in surprising moments of generosity and grace. While she strolls, Lillian recalls a long and eventful life that included a brief reign as the highest-paid advertising woman in America—a career cut short by marriage, motherhood, divorce, and a breakdown. Multiple copies of the book are available for reserve. See the Happy Bookers website for more information.
