Film Screening: Philomena Thursday, October 20, 7:00pm Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, PHILOMENA focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock--something her Irish-Catholic community didn't have the highest opinion of--and given away for adoption in the United States. In following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn't allow for any sort of inquiry into the son's whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Lee meets Sixsmith (Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son. Rated PG-13; 98 minutes. The public is invited to stay for a brief discussion after the film. All films in this series are recommended for adults. For more information, call the library at 908-454-3712. Partial funding is provided by the Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission. Movie License # 504025064

Happy Bookers Discussion: My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante Wednesday, October 26, 7:00pm The story begins in the 1950s, in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples. Growing up on these tough streets the two girls learn to rely on each other ahead of anyone or anything else. As they grow, as their paths repeatedly diverge and converge, Elena and Lila remain best friends whose respective destinies are reflected and refracted in the other. They are likewise the embodiments of a nation undergoing momentous change. Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighborhood, a city, and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between her protagonists, the unforgettable Elena and Lila. Multiple copies of the book are available for reserve. See the Happy Bookers website for more information.
