Ice : a memoir of gangster life and redemption-- from South Central to Hollywood
by Ice-T
Great Bio and I know I should've known but I still don't understand why books or movies must use the F bomb for every other word. Learned a lot regarding Ice T and his early years and happy to see he turned his life around. I knew he was a US Army Veteran and about his rapper background before he joined Law and Order SUV. Fast read but be warned of the language. Submitted by Judy.

Does this beach make me look fat? : True Stories and Confessions
by Lisa Scottoline
Lisa Scottoline and her daughter Francesca Serritella write a column, Chick Wit, for The Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer's Arts & Entertainment section. This book, subtitled "True Stories and Confessions", is a collection of their "Chick Wit" - humorous recollections of life events. I must say I enjoyed the chapters authored by Lisa a little better simply because we are closer in age and I had more difficulty relating to Francesca's accounts of dating in her home city of New York. But all in all, I enjoyed the book and found myself chuckling a few times. So, set aside your worries and enjoy this good summer read. Submitted by Eileen.

The Hawley book of the dead : a novel
by Chrysler Szarlan
Disappointing book for such an interesting premise. A hereditary witch returns to her ancestral Massachusetts homestead to protect her children after the murder of her husband. She must use both her craft and her family's history to protect her daughters and bring justice to the killer. Unfortunately, the writing gets in the way of fully enjoying the story. The action is filtered way too much through first person descriptions, cutting the reader off from entering into the story. Submitted by Reyna.

Collected ghost stories
by M. R. James
There is at least one podcast out there that explores the ghost stories of M.R. James, a Cambridge and Eton academic who wrote proflically in the early 20th century. The stories give insight into the Victorian/Edwardian mind and are interesting from both the standpoint of the development of the supernatural genre. as well as the historical perspective. Most interesting was the introduction to the work, where the cattiness of academia was on full display as James' contemporaries provided their observations on his character and intellect. The shell collector : stories
by Anthony Doerr
Anthony Doerr does it again. This is a collection of short stories from around the world. It is as if he spun the globe and put his finger on a country, someone gave him a few random elements and challenged him to write. And does he ever. His characters are subtle and yet have depth. His descriptions are flawlessly done. It's as if you can smell the air , feel the sun,or shade, even taste the food in his stories. I'm a fan. Submitted by Carol.
