RESOURCE OF THE MONTH: ANCESTRY.COMIf you are researching your family history online, you have probably been frustrated by the number of "free" sites that offer a little taste of information, and then charge you for the good stuff. Phillipsburg Library subscribes to Ancestry.com, so you can have complete access to this rich and ever-growing source of genealogical information. Unlike most of our databases, Ancestry.com is only available in the library. So pay us a visit, and you will also get the benefit of a professional librarian who can assist you with your search strategy.
If you want to try some genealogy searching at home, we also offer Heritage Quest. This database provides access to the United States Census, although the indexing is not as complete as Ancestry's. It also offers the PERSI genealogy index and a number of other valuable resources.

Flight behavior : a novel
by Barbara Kingsolver
Tired of living on a failing farm and suffering oppressive poverty, bored housewife Dellarobia Turnbow, on the way to meet a potential lover, is detoured by a miraculous event on the Appalachian mountainside that ignites a media and religious firestorm that changes her life forever.
This is one of those books that I read faster than I wanted to - I couldn't put it down, but I really wanted to linger with the characters. Dellarobia was a complex and appealing protagonist, and I empathized with her struggles. Kingsolver's descriptions of the natural world were gorgeous. Selected by Deb Messling, reference librarian.

Sisterland : a novelby Curtis SittenfeldWhen the strongest earthquake in U.S. history occurs just north of their St. Louis home, Kate and Jeremy find the disaster further complicated by Kate's self-proclaimed-medium twin's prediction about a more powerful earthquake, a situation that places Kate under public scrutiny and reveals her own psychic abilities. The psychic angle was interesting, but it's really more about character and emotions than about paranormal activity. I enjoyed its close examination of the conflict and miscommunication that can afflict any family. Selected by Deb Messling, reference librarian.
