Queen of heartsby Rhys BowenCharlie Chaplin makes an appearance in this 8th Royal Spyness Mystery. Lady Georgiana Rannoch's mother wants a quickie divorce in Reno. Since Georgie wants a change of scenery from Kingsdowne, where the Duke of Eynesford had died, she agrees to accompany her mother and give her moral support. They take a transatlantic cruise "across the pond." Aboard the ship, they meet Cyrus Goldman, a movie mogul. Cy wants to cast Georgie's Mummy in his next movie. Georgie, Mummy and a host of interesting characters go to Cy Goldman's home in Beverly Hills where Cy is killed. The Goldman estate is so protected that no one could get in or out without the guard knowing. So, the killer has to be one of the guests... but which one? Next in the series is "Malice At The Palace." Submitted by Eileen

A deadly business : a Mia Quinn mysteryby Lis W. Wiehl If you enjoy legal thrillers, Lis Wiehl's Deadly Business should be on your summer reading list. Wiehl is a Fox News Correspondent whose main character Mia Quinn is a prosecution attorney who is a single mom raising two children after the mysterious death of her husband. This is the second book in the Mia Quinn series and I thought it was good but not as good as the first called A Matter of Trust. Suspense reigned from the first chapter as she is brutally attacked in the courtroom by a killer she had sentenced to prison. Wiehl has many cliff hanger endings particularly in the last five chapters of the book. There is a space in the middle where I felt the book dragged. In this novel, she must deal with whether to charge three teenage boys as adults for a prank gone very wrong as well as deal with lingering doubts she must face about her husband and the manner in which he died. Did she really know the man she was married to for seventeen years? Although this is the second in the Mia Quinn series you do not have to read them in order to understand this book. If you have never read this author I suggest you try her book Snapshot which is sort of an historical fiction novel surrounding the mystery of the Kennedy assassination also. This book is a great way to spend a sultry summer afternoon. Submitted by Ann

Some luckby Jane Smiley If you are a fan of generational sagas of families you will love Jane Smiley's Some Luck, the story of the Langdon family. The story opens with Walter Langdon returning from World War I and trying to make a go of farming in Iowa. It begins in the 1920's and each of the thirty five chapters is another year in the Langdon family up until 1950. Five children and a devoted wife ran the Langdon farm working often 20 hours a day and without the aid of farm equipment. Jane Smiley spent a tremendous amount of time developing the characters in each chapter in a great deal of depth. Historical events in America at the time entered their lives and impinged upon the solitude of the Iowa far. By the 1950's the Langdons had spread from their Iowan farm to both coasts of the United States with many of them leaving home to contribute their talents and yes even some inventions with the world. This first book ends in the 1950's with the Langdon dealing with an outside world that has become very turbulent. I loved each and every chapter in this book and can't wait to read the next one Early Warning which continues their saga. It reminded me of Jeffrey Archer's Series The Clifton Family Chronicles which spanned five books. I loved the historical facts woven throughout the book. She writes very clearly and plot moves along at a great pace. Submitted by Ann

Orphan #8by Kim Van AlkemadeThis is the story of a woman coming to terms with her life both past and present. Particularly the affect her past as an orphan had on her life choices and life path. At an early age she tragically becomes suddenly orphaned and separated from her brother. Her experience as an orphan exposed her to medical studies. Experiments that left her physically affected. When she comes in contact with the doctor from her past she is confronted with her past. Both what she knew then and what she learns of it now and how perspectives change. I enjoyed the book but found the ending a little too abrupt. Submitted by Elizabeth

Dead wake : the last crossing of the Lusitaniaby Erik LarsonTo say Erik Larson is a talented writer of nonfiction is an understatement. He has accomplished great research regarding the last voyage of the Lusitania. He presents this history in such an compelling fashion that he has your attention throughout the book. He pulls in players large and small drawing the readers thoughts around the globe as political intrigues unfold, human frailty is exposed, technology develops, rules of engagement change, and all against the backdrop of the "war to end all wars." A fantastic read. Submitted by Carol

The rumor : a novelby Elin HilderbrandHilderbrand portrays a summer on Nantucket yet again in this very easy "beach read" book. She introduces you to all of the characters gradually throughout the book to the point where you feel like you get to know them personally. Similar to her other books, the characters' lives intertwine on Nantucket throughout the novel. Hilderbrand keeps you interested with just enough personal information and just enough drama (rumors) that occur. Submitted by Alison

Heirs and gracesby Rhys BowenA Royal Spyness Mystery. The year is 1934 and once again, Lady Georgiana Rannoch is summoned to Buckingham palace. She is cousin to His Royal Majesty, George V and 35th in line to the throne. Queen Mary introduces Georgie to her friend, Edwina, Dowager Duchess of Eynsford. The Duchess' eldest son, Cedric has produced no heirs and refuses to do so. Her youngest son, John spent a couple of years in the Australian outback where he married a schoolteacher and had a son, Jack. Young Jack is brought from Australia, where he worked on a sheep station, to England. It is Georgie's assignment to teach Jack social graces in order to prepare him to one day be Duke of Eynsford. When Cedric is found dead with Jack's knife in his back, an investigation ensues. This mystery kept me guessing until the end. I thought I had it figured out, but I was mistaken. Ms. Bowen weaves this historical fiction with wit, romance, a clever plot and interesting characters. Submitted by Eileen
