Olivia, Mourningby Yael PolitisA story of a young woman pre civil war, who upon her fathers death determines to set out and make a new life for herself. With little to her name but hope and courage she sets out to try to lay claim to her late uncle's farmstead. She enlisted the help of young black handyman from town. Together they set off to start their new lives. Things start off rough but just as they think new things are possible things turn suddenly tragic. It is the first in a series so there is more to come. I think a bit too dramatic an ending. Submitted by Elizabeth

Stars of fortuneby Nora RobertsI was looking for something to read on vacation, and this book caught my eye. Stars of Fortune is the first book in Roberts' The Guardian Trilogy. The story focuses on six individuals, all with special powers or talents, tasked with finding and protecting three magical stars. The stars were created by three goddesses for their new queen. A fourth goddess, who we quickly learn is evil, wants the powerful stars for her own greedy and destructive needs. We are first introduced to Sasha Riggs, one of the guardians, and learn of her gifts as a seer and empath. Her dreams lead her to take a spontaneous trip to Corfu where she teams up with the other five guardians to begin a quest to find and protect the Fire Star. It being Nora Roberts, of course some romance blooms between characters but she manages to weave it into a force that helps the guardians rather than leaving it as eye rolling fluff tossed in. I enjoyed learning of each character's power, and Roberts stretched the secrets out over the entire book to keep the reader guessing and intrigued. Even with all the magic and fantasy, this, as expected, was a light read. So anyone looking for a really deep/sci-fi/magical world/ 700 page-type of book should look elsewhere. That being said, it was fun and entertaining and I'll give the next book in the trilogy a chance. Submitted by Kimberly

The Swamps of Jerseyby Michael Stephen DaigleBeautiful writing with a dark plot: murder and dirty politics in a down and out city in New Jersey. Detective Frank Nagler, native son of this city, is a worn down, gritty character with a deeply buried sensitive side. Confronted with a body dumped in a bog at the tail end of a devastating storm that leaves the city in ruins, the case is further complicated because the corpse lacks both hands and head. Years ago, the detective apprehended a serial killer with a predilection for mutilation and became a local hero. Is this new grisly murder the work of a copycat killer? Fortunately for the reader, things are not that simple. The storyline is intricate and leaves the reader intrigued and turning the pages to discover what lies beneath. Characters are immediately human, complex and draw the reader into the decaying city they call home. The author has a way with infusing the prose with metaphors and similes that brings a scene to life and work on several levels. If you enjoy literary mysteries with well-crafted plots, this book is for you. Submitted by Reyna
